What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy in a recognised form of treatment in which manual techniques are used to treat physical disorders and restore health. Osteopaths are registered primary health care practitioners who have. To become registered as primary health care providers osteopaths complete at least 4 years university study during which they learn a ‘hands-on’ approach for the diagnosis and treatment of all kinds of pain, discomfort and immobility.

Osteopathy is a holistic treatment, in which the body is viewed as an interrelated unit of structure and function, and treatment aims to restore normal alignment and movement to return the body to a healthy state. 

What sort of training does a New Zealand osteopath have?

In New Zealand osteopathic training involves four years of full-time training for a bachelor’s degree or honours degree.  A further year of full-time training will complete a master’s degree in osteopathic medicine.  All osteopaths must also complete at least 25 hours of ongoing training each year.

How does an osteopathy work?

Osteopaths identify and treat the underlying source of issues, following clues provided by your body as well and your story. They work with the different parts of the body such as the skeleton, ligaments, fascia and musculature. 

Are all osteopaths the same?

Osteopaths learn a range of techniques and adapt their treatment to suit the patient. Some may focus on more structural techniques while others use gentler treatments, with many offering both, depending on what the patient is comfortable with.

What is the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor?

The main difference is that osteopaths work with the whole body, whereas chiropractors focus on the wellness of the spine and are more ‘joint-focused’.
