About timebanking

Timebanking helps create connected communities

This video shares the values and benefits of the Long Beach USA timebank.   Timebanking reflects the community it serves.  We hope to create an equally vibrant, connected timebank in Māngere!

Timebanks encourage people to exchange skills within a community where time is the currency. It's amazing what can be done without the use of money!

In a timebank everyone's time is equally valued. So helping a timebank member for one hour will earn you one time-credit.

A timebank is formed when a group of people agree to earn and spend time-credits to meet the needs of friends, neighbours, and the larger community.

Timebanks reflect the interests and goals of those who participate in them.

Timebank Mangere loves to share skills from gardening and composting to holding sewing circles to help mend clothes.

Timebank Mangere is part of a worldwide network. There are 30 in New Zealand and a few thousand around the world.

Timebanking helps build community resilience

Timebanking is a tool to let people share skills in a community.  We all have skills to share and timebanking connects skills with needs within a  community.  People can earn and spend time-credits and these exchanges are recorded in the timebank. Essentially time becomes the currency.  This simple idea helps build resilience in communities.  Lyttelton’s timebank was an important network called on to help in the immediate impact of the earthquakes.

In New South Wales, Australia timebanking has state support

Timebanking is being explored by the state of NSW as a way to help older people and generally reward volunteers.  Timebank builds connections between people while getting good things done.
